As the COVID-19 virus continues to evolve, just like every other virus, a new vaccine is available and better protection for you. Majority of vaccines don’t cover you forever, that is why scientists work every day all year long to come up with the ideal formula that will successfully protect us from the ever-changing germs or viruses. Because of these changes, it’s important to get the latest and greatest vaccine when it becomes available.
What does ‘bivalent’ mean?
Let’s look at the word itself: bi = two, meaning that this version of the vaccine was designed to cover two main strains of the virus right now. The bivalent booster contains a component of the original virus strain as well as a component of the omicron variant. It has been a while since most people have received their last booster, meaning the effectiveness of that last dose has worn off with time.
Who can get the latest vaccine?
According to the Food and Drug Administration, the Moderna bivalent booster is authorized for use in anyone ages 6 and older. The Pfizer-Biotech bivalent booster can be given to those ages 5 and up. You may receive a bivalent mRNA booster after completion of a monovalent primary series or after a previously received monovalent booster dose(s).
Will the vaccine make me sick?
No, the vaccine is not able to make you sick. It is possible that you can experience some mild side effects like fatigue, fever, and headache, but the most common side effect is sore arm.
How do I know if I’m eligible for the COVID bivalent booster?
The CDC recommends that people ages 5 and older receive a bivalent booster if it has been at least 2 months since their last COVID-19 vaccine dose, whether that was:
- Their final primary series dose, or
- An original (monovalent) booster
If you’re eligible, make time this month to get your COVID bivalent booster. You can schedule your vaccine at a Hamilton clinic by calling (810) 406-4246.
