FLINT, MI - On Wednesday, June 29th, from 12:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Hamilton Community Health Network takes its ‘Hamilton Health Talk’ series to Lapeer at the Lapeer District Library. The topic of conversation is centered around mental health and how to manage your emotions when faced with challenges that can affect your mental health. This session will be held at the Lapeer District Library on 921 W. Nepessing St., Lapeer, MI. Though focused on mental health there will also be health insurance resources available, behavioral health experts in attendance to answer questions, and information on all that Hamilton Community Health Network has to offer. Free admission to the public and free lunch will be provided.
Antonia Perry, Licensed Social Worker at Hamilton and speaker for the event, stated that mental health can be an overwhelming topic but proper education on the matter is key.
"As difficult of a topic as mental health is, having the right education in a relatable and applicable way can really make it something that is easier to talk about and manage, and that is our goal, providing information that will help people have more discussions about mental health and learn how to navigate what they are feeling.”
Perry also stated that many people want to talk about what they are feeling but don’t know how or where to begin or are afraid to speak out.
"One of the biggest hurdles to overcoming mental health challenges is simply the fear of talking about it. I think once people realize that it is ok to talk about what you are feeling and that they are not alone in how they feel, more and more people will gain the confidence to take their issues head on. ," she said.
Mental health problems affect everyone. According to mentalhealth.gov in 2020, one in five American adults experienced a mental health issue, one in 6 young people had a major depressive episode and one in 20 Americans lived with a serious mental illness such as, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or severe depression.
“Our priority with this event is to bring awareness to and hopefully help to remove the stigma surrounding talking about one’s mental health and provide resources on how to deal with certain stressors as they happen. Everyone goes through mental health challenges, and we really want to drive home that you are not alone in this matter., “said Stacy Sawyer, Marketing Director at Hamilton Community Health Network.
